History

The club gets its name from the original owner of the land namely, John Le Porter, who lived in the late 13th / early 14th centuries. The estate passed through several ownerships until in the 1890's the then owner Dr. Ross Smyth saw its potential to be developed into a golf course.

The course opened for play in 1899 and shortly afterwards saw the beginnings of course improvements which have continued up to the present and make Porters Park such a fine course for all playing abilities.

Many famous golfers have played at Porters Park including Messrs Vardon, Braid and Taylor as well as Henry Cotton, Ted Ray, Miss Cecil Leitch, Bernard Darwin and more recently Gary Player, Peter Townsend, Peter Thomson, Nick Faldo and Neil Coles. The Club boasts two Walker Cup players amongst its members namely, Brian Chapman and Peter Townsend the latter being one of the few players to play in both the Walker Cup and Ryder Cup teams.

In addition to the on-going investment in course improvements, the clubhouse has been sympathetically extended taking care to preserve its older features such as the domed ceiling in the lounge/ballroom.
